Silicosis is a disabling, nonreversible and sometimes fatal lung disease caused by overexposure to respirable crystalline silica. If you have complicated silicosis, you  will likely experience breathlessness, weakness, chest pain, a cough, and increased amounts of sputum.  Living in any dusty environment where crystalline silica is present potentially can increase a person's chances of getting silicosis. Exposure to crystalline silica occurs by breathing silica-containing dusts and inhalation of excessive amounts of these dusts is a serious health concern.

If the employer suspects that silica is a hazard at the workplace, even though it is not
known for sure, he/she  is still required by OSHA to communicate this potential hazard to
all employees

Geologic
What is silica dust?
Silica or silicon dioxide is the main component in sand and in most rocks, particularly sandstone, quartz and granite. Silica dust is created when rocks or building products that contain sand, quartz or granite are cut, crushed or abraded in a way that causes fine particles of silica to become airborne

What is Granite?  --quartz, alkali feldspar, and plagioclase feldspar

quartz Crystalline quartz or low quartz, (SiO2) Silica

Quartz Silica is an occupational CANCER HAZARD - can cause cancer. Several reliable studies have found silicosis in employees with exposure to considerably less than 1 mg/m3 respirable quartz.

International Hazard Classifications for Quartz Silica
Quartz silica meets the Canadian WHMIS criteria for class(es): D2A - Poisonous and infectious material - Other effects - Very toxic
