Self-injury is a destructive coping mechanism, like alcohol and drug abuse. More prevalent in females, and those who have difficulty expressing their emotions, they cut or otherwise harm themselves in order to find some balance. It can be a way to gain control in an out-of-control environment, a cry for help, a way to make internal pain visible on the outside, and a way to inflict punishment on a hated self. (4)
