Meniere's disease is a disorder of the inner ear that
causes spontaneous episodes of vertigo — a sensation of a spinning
motion — along with fluctuating hearing loss, ringing in the ear
(tinnitus), and sometimes a feeling of fullness or pressure in your
ear. In most cases, Meniere's disease affects only one ear. |

As a practicing nurse, I've seen people
with Meniere's
Disease (sometimes referred to as vertigo disease) spending years
looking for relief from this unpredictable torment. And it's even worse
to watch this happen to someone close to you. Meniere's Disease isn't
just a condition for the patient. It affects the entire family. So when
my husband started to get relief, so did we. We feel LIFE is pretty
wonderful! And several years later, things are still like this...pretty
wonderful. By now we have also learned a tremendous amount about this
condition and are looking into some possible causes of Meniere's
Disease. |

Meniere’s
Disease |
In 1861, Prosper Meniere described this
disorder which is characterized by a constellation of symptoms,
including fluctuating hearing level, a sensation of fullness in
the ear, roaring ringing in the affected ear, and episodic
vertigo. There is usually a low tone hearing loss which fluctuates
unpredictably. A sensation of fullness in the ear or a sensation that
the ear is clogged is also not uncommon. The roaring tinnitus is
usually of a low tone quality typically described as "ocean waves
crashing along the beach". |

Meniere's
Disease |
Menieres disease is characterized by severe attacks of
dizziness that can vary from a few minutes to several hours or even
days. Hearing loss and head noise (ringing in the ear) usually
accompany the attacks. The dizziness attacks can occur suddenly without
any warning. Violent spinning, whirling and falling sensations with
nausea are the most common symptoms. For some, a sensation of pressure
(fullness) in the ear is usually present. Sometimes if the pressure is
severe, it can effect normal activities such as lack of concentration
and short term memory loss. These attacks may occur at irregular
intervals. The individual can be free of symptoms for many years at a
time. |
