Glaucoma is chacterized by an increased pressure within the eyeball, causing damage to the optic disk and gradual loss of vision.Glaucoma occurs when there is damage to the optic nerve, the part of the eye that carries images we see to the brain.  As optic nerve cells are damaged, blind spots develop in the visual field.
