Atherosclerosis (ath/ero/skler/o/sis) in lay terms means "hardening of the arteries". a condition that results from the gradual buildup of fatty substances, including cholesterol, on the walls of the arteries. If narrowing becomes severe, it can cause angina or a heart attack.
